Background:
In order to keep music education moving forward, MMEA promotes innovative programming, including showcasing student creativity, increasing music educators’ abilities to teach a variety of musics, and helping music educators become more inclusive and culturally sustaining.
Purpose:
Recognizes music educators and music teacher education programs who have successfully integrated and sustained innovative programming in PK-16 music education. Nominations for this award are accepted in even years only.
A music educator nominee should:
- be a current member in good standing of MMEA
- be a music educator who works with PK-12 students
- have demonstrated meaningful and sustained innovation in music education over several years, specifically in terms of: (a) showcasing student creativity/compositions, (b) teaching/learning new genres/styles (inclusive of performance oriented classes as well as participatory and non-performing classes), (c) sustaining student cultures at school, and/or (d) partnering with the community to transcend school/community boundaries.
- The awardee must have implemented the innovation described above in a sustained (and sustainable) manner at a school.
A teacher education program should:
- have faculty who is/are current member(s) in good standing of MMEA
- have demonstrated meaningful and sustained innovation in music teacher education over the past several years, specifically in terms of: (a) showcasing student creativity/compositions, (b) teaching/learning new genres/styles (inclusive of performance oriented classes as well as participatory and non-performing classes), (c) sustaining student cultures at school, and/or (d) partnering with the community to transcend school/community boundaries.
- The awardee must have implemented the innovation describe above in a sustained (and sustainable) manner at/in partnership with a PK-12 school.
You may be requested at a later date to submit the following documentation supporting your nomination:
- Summary of reasons nominator feels the candidate should receive award.
- Candidate’s resume and/or resumes of relevant faculty members including education and employment history, administrative support, etc.
