Music Education Advocacy Day is April 11th

The Michigan Music Education Association (MMEA), in collaboration with the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA), will be celebrating Music Education Advocacy Day on Thursday, April 11th, 2019 at the State Capitol (Lansing). Representatives from each of these associations, along with parents and business leaders, will meet with legislators throughout the day to discuss the importance of music education in Michigan schools. A performance featuring performers from K-12 Michigan schools will be presented from 12-1 PM in the Glass Floor Rotunda. The groups featured on this concert will include:

Maples Elementary School Arabic Drumming Ensemble (Dearborn, MI): Elizabeth Meyers, Director

Jonah Cohen, piano soloist (Farmington Hills, MI)

Kinley Kiefer, ukulele/vocal soloist (East Lansing, MI)

Haslett Middle School 8thGrade Select Choir & Haslett High School Select Senior Women (Haslett, MI)
Samara Valla, Director; Christine Sathianathan, Accompanist

MMEA and MSVMA are united in their support for quality music education in Michigan. We believe that every PK-12 student in Michigan deserves equal access to a comprehensive and sequential music education, taught by a certified music educator as part of a well-rounded curriculum. We support the ongoing work of the Michigan Department of Education on certification, the parent dashboard, & the Top 10 in 10 initiative. We are encouraging lawmakers to support forthcoming K-5 music education bills.  If enacted, this ESSA-aligned legislation would authorize best practice guidelines for K-5 general music contact time and teaching environment, and would provide high quality music education experiences for all Michigan students.
