Description: The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Michigan Technological University seeks a dynamic director-educator to fill the position of tenure-track Director of Jazz Studies starting August 2019. The position entails directing an established jazz program with two student big bands (Jazz Lab Band and the Research and Development Jazz Band) and other small jazz combos. The successful candidate will also have experience in music recording that will facilitate contributing to the two sound major programs. Other duties may include coaching student-led chamber or popular music ensembles, advising students and student organizations, and participating in regional tours. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high-level leadership in directing large and small ensembles, thorough knowledge of jazz repertoire, experience in recruitment and retention, proven ability to maintain, innovate, and grow a successful jazz program, and a strong commitment to music pedagogy.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Direct Jazz Lab Band, Research and Development Jazz Band, and oversee student small jazz ensembles.
  2. Teach in the general music curriculum with courses such as History of Jazz, Jazz Improv, Music Appreciation, Music Theory, and other courses as necessary.
  3. Oversee practicum students that record department music ensemble concerts.

Requirements

Required Qualifications: MM or MA in Music completed by August 2019. Evidence of teaching experience at the university or secondary level. Desirable Qualifications: DMA or equivalent doctorate in Music. Professional teaching or directing experience at the university or secondary levels..
